SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- The commanding officer of Electronic Attack Squadron (VAQ) 134, was relieved Dec. 8, aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command.
Cmdr. Jonathan Jackson was relieved as a result of an investigation that confirmed his failure to obey a lawful regulation by creating and condoning an intimidating, hostile and offensive work environment in violation of DoN policy on sexual harassment. At admiral's mast Dec. 8, Commander, Carrier Strike Group 1, Rear Adm. Thomas K. Shannon found Jackson guilty of UCMJ Article 92 for violation of a lawful general order, Article 133 for conduct unbecoming an officer and gentleman and was awarded non-judicial punishment.
Cmdr. Gregory Byers, the squadron's executive officer, has assumed command of VAQ-134. Jackson is awaiting reassignment.
VAQ-134, assigned to Carrier Air Wing 17 and embarked with Carl Vinson, left on Nov. 30 on deployment to the U.S. Pacific Command and U.S. Central Command areas of responsibility, supporting 5th and 7th Fleet operations including maritime security operations, theater security cooperation, and Operation Enduring Freedom.
