Combined Patrol Detains Several Suspected Insurgents

WASHINGTON, Dec. 9, 2011 – A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a patrol in the Charkh district of Afghanistan’s Logar province today, military officials reported.
The suspects carried small-arms and bomb-making materials.
In other Afghanistan operations today:
-- In the Maiwand district of Kandahar province, a combined patrol found and destroyed nine homemade bombs, with several containing at least 5 pounds of high explosives. Another combined patrol in the same district found and destroyed nearly 1,550 pounds of marijuana seeds.
-- A combined force seized 56 hand grenades, two anti-personnel mines and small-arms ammunition in the Surkh Rod district of Nangahar province.
-- A combined force confiscated 13 mortar rounds and two 107 mm rockets in the Bagram district of Parwan province.
In Afghanistan operations yesterday:
-- In the Shah Joy district of Zabul province, a combined force found and destroyed 440 pounds of marijuana and a half-acre marijuana field.
-- Also in Zabul’s Shah Joy district, a coalition patrol found and destroyed machine-gun and small-arms ammunition, three rocket-propelled grenades, an illumination round, 44 pounds of explosive material and bomb-making components.
-- A combined force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in the Musa Qala district of Helmand province. The Taliban leader directs roadside-bomb and ambush attacks against coalition forces in the northern part of the province.
