Islamists lead in Egyptian elections – early results

RIA Novosti

14:52 30/11/2011 CAIRO, November 30 (RIA Novosti) - Preliminary indications suggest the Freedom and Justice Party, created by the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, and the Salafi Nour Party are leading in most of the provinces where Egyptian parliamentary elections were held, an Egyptian newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The Islamist parties are leading in six out of the nine provinces, where the vote took place, Al-Ahram newspaper said.

Egyptians completed on Tuesday evening the first round of voting in the first parliamentary elections since the January 25 uprising which led to the fall of the Hosni Mubarak regime.

According to preliminary data, voter turnout was 70 percent, a record for Egypt. The second phase of parliamentary elections is scheduled for December 14-15.

The country has a complex three-stage scheme of voting, which will take almost four months. A total of 55 parties are registered to take part in the polls.

The election date was put into question by violent protests in Cairo and Alexandria last week against delays in the transition to civilian rule following February's overthrow of Mubarak. Over 40 people were killed and hundreds injured.

The elections will become the first serious step in handing over power to democratically elected authorities.
