NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) held a change of command ceremony aboard the ship at Naval Station Norfolk, Nov. 4.
Cmdr. Bruce G. Schuette relieved Cmdr. Daniel D. Sunvold.
Schuette "fleeted up" after serving as Bainbridge's executive officer from April 2010 to November 2011; his relief is Cmdr. David J. Pearson.
The Executive Officer to Commanding Officer Fleet-Up Program allows executive officers to serve aboard ship for 18 months and then "fleet up" to commanding officer for their command tour on the same ship.
Recently, Bainbridge completed a seven-month deployment in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility to prevent and deter piracy in support of NATO's Operation Ocean Shield. During this deployment, Bainbridge also provided maritime security in the Internationally Recognized Transit Corridor of the Gulf of Aden.
Bainbridge was commissioned in 2005 and is one of 34 Arleigh Burke Flight IIA-class destroyers in active service.
