SUBIC BAY, Philippines (NNS) -- Sailors assigned to submarine tender USS Emory S. Land (AS 39) welcomed aboard their new captain during a change of command ceremony in Subic Bay, Philippines, Oct. 28.

Capt. Paul E. Savage relieved Capt. Thomas P. Stanley as the ship's commanding officer.

"I am very proud of everything the Sailors and civilian mariners of the Emory S. Land have accomplished during my time on board and I will miss the opportunity to serve with dedicated professional Sailors operating at the pointy end of the spear," said Stanley.

Stanley congratulated the crew on a job well done during his four months aboard. He will return to his assignment on the staff of the chief of naval operations.

Under Stanley's command, Emory S. Land Sailors and civilian mariners completed the first ever emergent dry-dock in a foreign shipyard, and the first simultaneous tended mooring and continuous maintenance availabilities of a guided-missile class submarine (USS Georgia (SSGN 729) and fast-attack class submarine (USS Dallas (SSN 700) in Land's forward-deployed homeport of Diego Garcia. The crew also recently completed a coordinated tended mooring with USS Columbia (SSN 771) a part of a theater security cooperation port visits in Sepangar, Malaysia.

"The crew has met numerous challenges head on, worked very hard, and improved in their ability to support the deployed submarine force," Stanley said.

During Stanley's time aboard, Emory S. Land delivered more than 1,700 hours of submarine maintenance, completed more than 300 submarine repair jobs, and provided repair and tended unit services to nine surface ships and four submarines.

"I must thank Captain Stanley for his tremendous leadership and complete dedication to his crew over the last few months. With his unique understanding of tender operations, and strong maintenance experience, he has set us on the course to success to assume the role as the lead tender in Guam," said Savage.

"Our ship's mission is to keep the forward-deployed and forward-based submarines and surface ships of our fleet ready through repair, maintenance, and tended support services. I am truly impressed by the ton of talent that we have onboard, and look forward to all of the challenges that we will face together as we carry out the mission," Savage added.

Savage graduated with merit from the United States Naval Academy in 1988 with a bachelor's degree in mathematics. He most recently served as the Deputy Director for Navy Training and Education in Washington, D.C.

Emory S. Land is undergoing a voyage repair period in Subic Bay, Philippines en route to Guam where she will temporarily relieve sister tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) as the lead submarine maintenance activity for the U.S. 7th fleet. Emory S. Land is a forward-deployed naval force permanently homeported in Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory.
