UN Security Council Calls For Power Transfer In Yemen

October 21, 2011

The United Nations Security Council have unanimously passed a resolution urging Yemen's government and opposition to quickly reach a deal that would end President Ali Abdullah Saleh's 33 years in power.

It was the council's first resolution on Yemen since massive protests began eight months ago.

The resolution mentions no sanctions or other measures against the Yemeni regime.

The text "strongly condemns" government violence against demonstrators, adding that "those responsible for violence, human rights violations and abuses should be held accountable."

Several hundred people have been killed since protests against him erupted in January.
