USS Kentucky Commanding Officer Relieved

BANGOR, Wash. (NNS) -- The commanding officer of the Bangor, Wash.-based Trident ballistic-missile submarine USS Kentucky (SSBN 737), was relieved of command Oct. 19.
Cmdr. Joseph A. Nosse was relived by Commander, Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 17, Capt. Paul Skarpness, due to a loss of confidence in Nosse's ability to command.
Nosse, who took command of Kentucky's Gold Crew in February 2010 and assumed command of the ship's combined crew in August 2011, has been administratively reassigned to the staff of Commander, Submarine Group 9.
Cmdr. Gerhard Somlai, deputy commander of SUBRON 17, has assumed command of Kentucky until a permanent replacement is named. Somlai previously commanded the Blue Crew of the Trident ballistic-missile submarine USS Nebraska (SSBN 739).
