Jordan's King Names Judge As New Prime Minister

October 17, 2011

Jordan's King Abdullah II has named a prominent international judge as his prime minister.

A royal palace statement said International Court of Justice Judge Awn al-Khasawneh, 61, succeeded Maruf al-Bakhit, 64, who resigned earlier in the day after a majority of 70 out of 120 deputies called for his departure.

Al-Bakhit was widely perceived as dragging his feet on political reform. He was also accused of corruption during his earlier tenure (2005-07) as prime minister.

There have been small weekly demonstrations in Amman for months by protesters demanding economic and political reforms. The king has expressed support, but little has been done.
