SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $46.5 million contract for the design and construction of a truck company operations complex at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Sept. 22 to Straub-Driver Joint Venture of Fallbrook, Calif.

"An adequate and efficiently configured truck company complex is greatly needed," said Reagan Pablo, NAVFAC Southwest contract specialist for this project. "The truck company's mission is to provide medium tactical vehicle support to the Marine Division in support to the movement of personnel and equipment in support of ground combat operations."

Pablo explained that the current truck company on Marine Corps Camp Pendleton is undersized with inadequate facilities scattered throughout the base. He said the new project will alleviate these concerns.

"The truck company operations project will design and construct an operations complex that will provide adequately sized and efficient facilities," said Pablo. "Multiple masonry buildings will be constructed or renovated to accommodate all required spaces. Sustainable design features will be included in the design of the project. The new complex will enhance the Marine Corps' ability to achieve mission readiness."

The work scheduled to be performed includes design and construction of a 22,000 square foot dining facility, a 10,000 square foot multi-story administrative facility, a 9,000 square foot armory and other smaller facilities.

"This project also involves the complete renovation of a 26,000 plus square foot heavy vehicle maintenance facility along with the addition of a new maintenance bay," said Pablo. "This complex includes many different functional areas including a high-bay maintenance space with multiple bays, classrooms, a small theater space, and an administration and dining space. Facilities such as the maintenance facility and the armory will have specific and complex requirements associated with its function."

The expected completion date is Sept. 2013.
