WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Naval District Washington (NDW) officials provided a demonstration of the Navy's SmartGrid Pilot to John Conger, Assistant Deputy under Secretary of Defense for Installations and Environment, Sept. 28 at the Washington Navy Yard.

The Navy's SmartGrid Pilot is comprised of interconnected technologies that collectively intelligently monitor, predict, control, and respond to building and utility management systems. Using SmartGrid technologies, Navy can adjust energy distribution and controls to lower cost and divert energy to power critical assets during an emergency.

"This secure integration will produce real-time solutions to give us more visibility of the security and flow of our energy on base," said Jeff Johnson, chief information officer at NDW.

NDW has networked advanced meters that track energy consumption with existing building and utility control systems onto a single, secure system. Energy data is displayed with dashboard systems to allow managers to remotely and securely monitor and direct energy systems across the entire installation. The system can respond to external drivers like current energy supply challenges and weather, as well as internal demand signals such as military operations and facility maintenance.

"With SmartGrid technologies, commanding officers can divert energy in an emergency to power critical assets with the push of a button," said Johnson. "On a more day-to-day basis, energy managers can quickly pinpoint where we consuming more energy than we should so we can quickly take steps to address the problem."

To achieve Navy energy goals and meet federal mandates, the Navy's shore energy approach is focused on increasing energy efficiency; transforming culture and behavior and integrating renewable energy and sustainability. SmartGrid technologies are a key enabler to the Navy's shore energy strategy.

The Navy is using the SmartGrid Pilot at NDW to evaluate the Navy's approach to SmartGrid and develop a Smart Energy Concept of Operations for Navywide deployment.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus laid out five aggressive energy goals in October 2009 to improve our energy security and efficiency, increase our energy independence, and help lead the nation toward a clean energy economy. This initiative assists in achieving the energy goal of increasing alternative energy afloat and ashore where by 2020, the Department of the Navy (DON) will produce at least 50 percent of shore-based energy requirements from alternative sources and 50 percent of DON installations will be net-zero.

This initiative is one of many throughout the Navy and Marine Corps which will enable the Department of the Navy to achieve the Secretary Ray Mabus' energy goals to improve our energy security and efficiency afloat and ashore, increase our energy independence, and help lead the nation toward a clean energy economy.
