Afghan employee kills U.S. citizen at Kabul CIA station

RIA Novosti

15:10 26/09/2011 MOSCOW, September 26 (RIA Novosti) - An Afghan employee has killed one U.S. citizen and injured another at a compound believed to house the CIA station in Kabul.

The incident occurred at the former Ariana hotel, an annex of the U.S. embassy, late on Sunday. The facility is one of the most heavily-guarded in the Afghan capital.

It comes just two weeks after insurgents attacked the U.S. embassy and NATO headquarters in Kabul, leaving 25 people dead.

The gunman, an employee of the U.S. government, was shot dead.

“There was a shooting incident at an annex of the U.S. embassy in Kabul last night involving an Afghan employee who was killed. The motivation for the attack is still under investigation at this time,” embassy spokesman Gavin Sundwall said on Monday.

The embassy has now reopened for business.

There was no immediate comment from the CIA.

The Washington Times cited an unnamed official as saying the Americans who were shot were “at the wrong place at the wrong time,” and not specifically targeted.

Last week, Burhanuddin Rabbani, chairman of Afghanistan's High Peace Council, was killed by a suicide bomber in the Afghan capital.

The Taliban claimed credit for the attack.
