U.S. Citizen Killed By Afghan Employee At Kabul Embassy Annex

26.09.2011 08:53

The U.S. Embassy in Kabul says an Afghan employee has killed an American citizen and injured another in a "shooting incident" at an embassy annex.

Embassy spokesman Gavin Sundwall said the Afghan employee was also killed in the incident, which occurred on September 25, and that the matter was currently being investigated.

"At this time we do not know the motivation behind the attack and that is still under investigation," he said. "What I would like to say to everyone is that we mourn the loss of life in the incident and we express our heartfelt condolences to the families."

Sundvall said the motivation for the attack was still under investigation. The annex is believed to be used by the Central Intelligence Agency, which has declined comment on the incident.

The injured U.S. citizen, whose injuries Sundwall said were "not life-threatening," was evacuated to a military hospital in Afghanistan. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The incident comes two weeks after gunmen attacked the U.S. Embassy and government compounds in Kabul, killing 25.

Last week, former President Burhanuddin Rabbani, the chief of Afghanistan's High Peace Council, was killed in a suicide bomb attack in the Afghan capital.
