Former Afghan President Rabbani laid to rest in Kabul

RIA Novosti

13:18 23/09/2011 KABUL, September 23 (RIA Novosti) - The funeral of former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani, who was killed in a bomb attack on Tuesday, was held in the capital Kabul on Friday.

President Hamid Karzai was among thousands of mourners paying their respects at the presidential palace in the Afghan capital.

Rabbani, who served as president in the 1990s and was recently appointed chair of the High Peace Council, was killed by a suicide bomber claiming to be a Taliban envoy.

"Rabbani's blood requires us to continue our efforts towards peace and national unity," President Karzai told mourners.

"Today we are witnessing one of the biggest and saddest events of this important political time in the history of the world," the BBC quoted Rabbani's son, Salahuddin, as saying.

No group has claimed credit for Rabbani's killing.

Kabul was hit by a multi-pronged attack by insurgents last week which targeted the U.S. embassy, NATO headquarters and police buildings.

The Taliban said they were behind the violence that left at least 25 people dead.
