SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $15 million task order Sept. 16 to SOLPAC Construction Inc. of San Diego for the repair and renovation of bachelor officer quarters and senior enlisted barracks at Naval Air Station (NAS) Lemoore.

"This project will help modernize critical housing facilities for the base, allowing better quality of life for its occupants as well as making the facilities safer by upgrading them to meet current seismic codes and anti-terrorism/force protection (ATFP) requirements," said Ryan Carter, NAVFAC Southwest project manager.

The project will benefit NAS Lemoore by improving the quality of the life for Sailors, Marines, and other civilian employees who require quarters while on the air station. It will also provide a better standard of living for the families of military personnel who will use the facilities.

"The renovation of these projects will result in two of the buildings achieving a LEED Gold rating," said Carter. "This is a significant accomplishment for the project and will help alleviate excessive energy usage, resulting in less costs for the base and less impact on the environment."

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. It is a nationally recognized performance-oriented system designed for rating new and existing buildings or groups of buildings based on a variety of green building principles. LEED Gold is the third-highest of four ratings.

This project will provide for the design and construction to upgrade and repair the current bachelor housing buildings to meet current building codes, Americans with Disabilities Act standards, Federal Emergency Management Agency and Tri-service Seismic design criteria, installation requirements, anti-terrorism force protection (ATFP) standards and leadership in energy and environmental design and energy code requirements.

The task order was issued within a multiple award construction contract that has already been awarded. Work is expected to be completed by March 2013.
