SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $9.4 million task order within a previously awarded multiple awarded contract Sept. 14 to Reyes Construction Inc. of Pomona, Calif., for the design and construction of operation access points at Camp Pendleton.
"Camp Pendleton's beaches, land formations, and air space provide an optimum environment to train Marines in the way they will fight in actual combat," said Miguel Ramirez, NAVFAC Southwest project design manager. "Camp Pendleton is the West Coast center of excellence for expeditionary operations."
This project will provide access for military tactile vehicles to San Onofre Beach for various military exercises. To provide access, the existing railroad trestle will be demolished and the railway bridge will be replaced.
"Camp Pendleton is the only Marine Corps Base on the West Coast where amphibious training operations occur, and is the nexus and entry point for expeditionary operations involving both USMC and naval elements throughout the western range and training area complex," said Ramirez. "Optimal training replicates as closely as possible the conditions that might be encountered in a real-world operational context. Camp Pendleton has 17 miles of sandy beach on the Pacific Ocean, yet various restrictions and competing land uses severely limit the availability of beach for Marine amphibious training. The result is that less than 1 mile, or 6 percent, of Camp Pendleton beach is currently usable for major amphibious landing training. The existing access corridors, such as Green Beach, are the only operational corridors available for moving past civilian north/south transportation corridors on the way to inland training objectives."
The task order was issued within a multiple award construction contract that has already been awarded. The expected completion date is October 2013.
