GOSEONG, Korea (NNS) -- Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 133 Detachment Chinhae aboard Commander, Fleet Activities Chinhae (CFAC) volunteered time restoring the Goseong Orphanage in Goseong, Republic of Korea (ROK), Sept. 17.
Although NMCB 133 has several construction projects currently underway, nearly a dozen Seabees volunteered for this project.
"Community service projects demonstrate a continuing partnership between the U.S and Korea," said Chief Builder Benjamin J. Corbett, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 133. He said it's good to do something for the local community even though they're very busy with the deployment.
Seabees provided minor maintenance and laid new floor tiles in a classroom for the orphanage. The refurbishment was a two-day project.
The work done by the volunteers saved the school approximately $3,000 in supplies and labor costs.
The Goseong Orphanage was founded in 1947 and houses nearly 35 students.
During the visit, the children of Goseong challenged the Seabees to games of ping pong and soccer. Despite a language barrier, both groups enjoyed the day together during the community relations project.
"I volunteered because this was a unique opportunity to interact with the children," Equipment Operator 3rd Class Maria Iglesias. "It has been fun to meet the students."
Involvement in community relations projects continue to build a positive partnership between the U.S. and Republic of Korea communities.
