CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $40 million contract for the design of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Facility at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton Sept. 12 to Harper Construction Company Inc. of San Diego.
"The existing facilities for the Naval aviation training are not adequate and out of date," said Dora Villa, NAVFAC Southwest design manager for this project. "This contract will provide to the students and instructors a consolidated facility including all functions and tools required for proper training."
This project will provide instruction and administrative space to support aviation training at Camp Pendleton. The 131,000 square foot facility will serve as a training facility for aviation mechanics that repair helicopters.
"The applied instruction space includes over 30 electronic classrooms, aviation training shop laboratories and high bay composite maintenance training space for up to 400 students and 100 instructors," said Michelle Puentespina, NAVFAC Southwest architectural design manager for this project. "The composite maintenance trainer hangar bay space can accommodate up to nine helicopter aircraft trainers and two cockpit trainers."
The administrative spaces will be for executives, administrators, and officers. The facility will also include instructor rooms, instructor and student lounges, a learning resource center, instructional development systems, an auditorium, and lobbies.
"Camp Pendleton is growing every day with the multiple construction projects going on around the base. This contract will bring to Camp Pendleton a building that can be a landmark for the base because it's unique in kind," said Villa. "The project also incorporates the surrounding buildings into a campus-like environment connecting and upgrading existing pedestrian circulation. This will invite people to walk from one place to another instead of driving."
Improvements to the current location include roads, access driving, sidewalks, gutters, parking, and curbs. These new pedestrian and bicycle features support LEED. Storm water drainage and improvements and storm water prevention plan and special features for low impact design also support LEED.
"There are a couple of special features in the design that makes this facility world class. The new Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training facility will house state of the art electronic instruction and training classrooms and shop laboratories for the CNATT Marine Detachment group" said Michelle Puentespina. "The exterior presents a dynamic and exciting architectural form but still provides a consistent visual image within the community. The entire facility is integrated in the site with interconnected pedestrian environment consisting of pathways, promenades, outdoor recreation areas and park like campus atmosphere."
The expected completion date is February 2014.
