PANAMA CITY, Fla. (NNS) -- Seabees from Naval Mobile Construction Battalion (NMCB) 11 completed Phase I of a construction project Sept. 18, during their 10-month homeport, for the Navy Munitions Command (NMC) at Naval Support Activity (NSA) Panama City, Fla.

Seabees from NMCB 74 will arrive next month to start Phase II of the project.

"Public Works Department (PWD) Panama City recognized that this type of project would be a perfect fit for a Seabee Battalion to use as training," said Ensign Steven Ferrara, NMCB 11 Detachment officer in charge.

The 90' by 55' steel structure will be used for the storage of inert ordnance by NMC, a tenant at NSA Panama City.

"This type of project allows the customer and the installation to receive a necessary building while the Seabees get training on the skills they need to make an impact in their battalion," said PWD Public Works Officer Lt. Cmdr. Chris Landess.

Landess walked through the project site Sept. 14 with NMC CONUS East Commanding Officer Capt. Charles Marks to observe work on the project.

"I am appreciative of how NMCB 11 upheld the values of the Naval Construction Force - delivering a high quality product to the customer while always maintaining safety as their top priority," said Landess. "Hoorah! to the Seabees from NMCB 11."

NMCB 11 is in the middle of a 10-month homeport at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, Miss. During this time, the 600-person battalion concentrates on homeport projects, such as this one, as well as tactical and technical training. They are currently preparing for an eight-month deployment to Afghanistan.

The project is expected to be completed January 2013.
