US drone aircraft crashes in NW Pakistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Sept. 18, IRNA -- A US spy aircraft crashed in Pakistan’s South Waziristan tribal region on Sunday, officials in the region said.

The pilotless aircraft came down at Makeen area of South Waziristan, bordering Afghanistan, which is under the aerial monitoring of American unmanned aircraft to check movement of the suspected militants.

The US drone aircraft routinely fired missiles in Waziristan tribal region to hit hideouts of the Taliban militants.

Officials said Pakistani forces in South Waziristan took the wreckage of the US aircraft after the crash.

There was no report about the causes of the crash and Taliban claimed shooting down the aircraft.

But security sources said militants had not been active in the area and they had been expelled by the security forces as the result of military operation.

Officials say the spy plane may have crashed due to technical problems.
