MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (NNS) -- NAVSUP Weapon Systems Support announced a renewal of a $162,239,835 Performance Based Logistics (PBL) contract with Raytheon Missile Systems Co., Tucson, Ariz., not-to-exceed fixed-price requirements contract for support of the PHALANX Close-In-Weapon System (CIWS), Sept. 14.
Work will be performed in Louisville, Ky., through August 2016.
CIWS is a self-contained and versatile, defensive weapon system proven to meet the shifting at-sea and now ashore missions of ongoing U.S. overseas contingency operations. The system features closed-loop, advanced radar and computer technology, to provide an autonomous, automatic terminal defense weapon system designed to detect, track, and engage fast-moving targets, thereby protecting ships and their crews against an increasing number of threats including small, fast gunboats; standard and guided artillery; helicopters; mines and a variety of shore-launched, anti-ship missiles. CIWS has recently been configured with the added shipboard agility to train onto and neutralize close proximity waterborne threats. Two-hundred-seventy CIWS systems are installed on 210 U.S. Navy and Coast Guard ships, as well as on vessels of 20 foreign navies.
In addition to naval usage, the U.S. Army is currently operating 31 Land-Based PHALANX Weapons System (LPWS) platforms in forward operating bases in Iraq to protect U.S. and allied warfighters from rocket and mortar attacks. The LPWS has defeated numerous rocket and mortar attacks, saving many lives.
NAVSUP WSS Mechanicsburg, Pa. continues to benefit from collaborating with industry partners in the development of strategic PBL solutions. The PHALANX CIWS III PBL contract with Raytheon Missile Systems Company leverages the expertise and best practices gained over the past 10 years of performance. This follow-on contract will provide the full spectrum of weapon system support to the warfighter at the best possible value to the taxpayer.
A field activity of the Naval Supply Systems Command, NAVSUP WSS is the U.S. Navy's supply chain manager providing worldwide support to the aviation, surface ship, and submarine communities. NAVSUP WSS provides Navy, Marine Corps, joint and allied forces with products and services that deliver combat capability through logistics.
