NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- The Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Mid-Atlantic Northeast Integrated Product Team awarded a $25 million contract to Triton/Seaward of Bremerton, Wash., for repairs to the marginal wharf and pier 15 at Submarine Base New London Aug. 31.
The repairs will take place along the 15,400 linear feet of the marginal wharf, which runs along the entire water's edge along the Thames River. According to Leonard Topp, NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic's project manager for this effort, the marginal wharf provides the interface between the water and the land and this project will restore the structure to its original design load capacities.
The marginal wharf will see restoration of its structural elements, including piles, reinforced concrete and bulkheads.
This project also provides for repairs to pier 15, which provides support to the base's dry dock. The structural restoration of the pier will include pile encasements and the installation of a new induced current cathodic protection system, which helps prevent metal corrosion.
"The original construction of the marginal wharf spans many, many years and is in current need of repair due to extended exposure to the very corrosive marine environment," said Topp. "The repairs included in this project will assure the safe transport of materials to and from the submarines berthed in New London."
Other waterfront repairs that will be part of this project include concrete deck and beam restoration; structural and non-structural pile encasements; recoating of bulkheads and other concrete and steel structural members; repair and or replacement of mooring hardware and timber and composite fender systems; concrete deck sealing, pavement repairs; and repairs to deteriorated steel sheet pile bulkheads.
The project is scheduled to take approximately two years.
