Serb, Kosovo Officials Resume EU-Mediated Talks

02.09.2011 11:30

Top officials from Serbia and Kosovo have resumed EU-mediated talks to resolve practical problems arising from Serbia's refusal to recognize the independence majority ethnic Albanian Kosovo declared in 2008.

The meeting in Brussels is the first since violence flared up in Serb-dominated northern Kosovo in late July.

The main issue on the table is a trade row which sparked the violence. Serbia is blocking Kosovo exports passing through its territory, refusing to recognize Kosovo's customs stamps.

A Kosovo policeman was killed in July in clashes which erupted when Kosovo police tried to take control of two border crossings in the Serb-run north and enforce a counterban on Serbian goods entering Kosovo.

The violence forced NATO-led KFOR peacekeepers to deploy troops and take over the crossings.
