RIA Novosti

16:27 23/08/2011 ATHENS, August 23 (RIA Novosti) - President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Dervis Eroglu met on Tuesday to resume direct peace talks, Cyprus Radio reported.

The meeting took place at the Chief of Missions' residence in the United Nations Protected Area of Nicosia.

The last meeting, scheduled for August 5, was cancelled at the request of the Greek Cypriot delegation.

The request was accepted both by the UN and the Turkish Cypriot team.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third.

Peace talks are underway for a negotiated settlement to reunite the country.
