Dozens of Palestinians injured in clashes with Israelis in West Bank
13:21 22/08/2011 GAZA, August 22 (RIA Novosti) - At least 55 people were injured in clashes with Israeli forces on Monday in the south of the West Bank, the Voice of Palestine radio station reported.
A group of Palestinians threw stones at Israelis, who conducted a special operation in the West Bank city of Hebron. The Israeli military responded by using rubber bullets and tear gas against the crowd.
During the operation, Israelis detained dozens of Palestinians who were questioned and released several hours later. The operation came a day after some 120 supporters of the radical Islamist movement Hamas were apprehended in Hebron and its suburbs.
Tensions between Israel and the Palestinian territories escalated last Thursday after terrorist attacks in the southern Israeli city of Eilat. The Israeli military launched a series of air strikes on the Gaza Strip in response to the attacks in southern Israel in which eight people died. So far, a total of 15 Palestinians have been killed and over 60 injured in the airstrikes.
Armed groups in the Gaza Strip responded by launching long-range Grad missiles and short-range Kassam rockets into Israel's border territories. Israeli media said nearly 100 missiles were fired from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel over the weekend and shelling continued into Monday morning. Two people were killed and 12 injured.
