VALLETTA, Malta (NNS) -- The guided-missile destroyer USS Carney (DDG 64) arrived in Valletta, Malta, for a port visit, Aug. 14.

The visit serves to continue U.S. 6th Fleet efforts to build global maritime partnerships with European nations and improve maritime safety and security.

"We are here to interact with the Maltese, see some great sights, and build and develop our global maritime relationships," said Ensign Jordan Dantas.

While in Valletta, the crew will meet with local officials, participate in cultural activities, give tours of the ship, attend a reception commemorating the 69th anniversary of the Santa Marija Convoy and conduct a community relations project at Selmun Beach.

"The beach cleanup is one of my favorite aspects of the port call," said Chief Information Systems Technician (Select) Willie Wilkerson. "It is great to leave a foreign port knowing that you made a local environmental contribution."

The ship's Morale, Welfare and Recreation committee has also organized local tours for the Sailors including kayaking and a jeep safari tour. The crew will take this time to explore Valletta and its culture and strengthen bonds with the local community.

Carney is homeported out of Mayport, Fla., and is on a three-month deployment supporting maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
