Ashton reiterates criticism of Israeli housing plans in E. Jerusalem

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Aug 12, IRNA -- The European Union Foreign Policy Chief, Catherine Ashton, on Friday lashed out again at the Zionist regime for its highly controversial settlement expansion plans in the occupied East Jerusalem.

'It is with deep regret that, once again, I received information of the publicly stated intention of the Israeli government to continue settlement expansion in East Jerusalem,' Ashton was quoted as saying in a press statement from Brussels.

'Settlement activity threatens the viability of an agreed two-state solution and
undermines ongoing efforts to resume negotiations,' the Vice-President of the EU Commission added.

The EU has repeatedly called on Israel to end all settlement activities, including natural growth, and to dismantle outposts erected since March 2001.

On Thursday, The Zionist regime gave the go ahead to build 1,500 new housing units in occupied East Jerusalem.

Ashton has repeatedly stated that all Israeli settlement activities were 'illegal under international law.'
