MANAMA, Bahrain (NNS) -- Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 50 held a change of command ceremony at Naval Support Activity, Bahrain, July 28.

Captain Edward Cashman relieved Capt. James Malloy as commander of DESRON 50.

DESRON 50 became the first destroyer squadron to be permanently forward-deployed to the Arabian Gulf when it was re-established Nov. 30, 1994.

"I've been truly lucky to have this job," said Malloy. "It's the wonderful people throughout this region that make everything possible."

"DESRON 50 has more than 800 Sailors aboard 12 ships that reach more regional partners than anyone, building maritime bonds throughout the region," said Vice Adm. Mark Fox, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT). "Malloy is a maritime ambassador to our regional partners who brings the one team, one fight message to the U.S and Gulf Coast Council (GCC) team."

Malloy assumed command of DESRON 50 in June 2010 and will transfer to the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington D.C.

"I look forward to continuing the great work and building new understandings and capabilities throughout the U.S. Fifth Fleet area of responsibility (AOR)," said Cashman. Cashman had been deputy of DESRON 50 since June 2010.

DESRON 50 conducts maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility, developing security in the maritime environment, to promote stability and global prosperity. The operations complement the counter-terrorism and security efforts of regional nations and seek to disrupt violent extremists' use of the maritime environment as a venue for attack or to transport personnel, weapons or other material.
