MAYPORT, Fla. (NNS) -- NAVSUP Fleet Logistics Center (NAVSUP FLC) Jacksonville Logistics Support Representative (LSR) team stood ready to fulfill USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) logistics requirements (LOGREG) when the ship arrived at Naval Station Mayport, Fla., July 24.
According to Eisenhower's Principal Assistant for Logistics Lt. Hung Dang, the ship's visit to Mayport offered NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville LSR team a unique opportunity to shine and demonstrate its capabilities.
In mid-June, Australian Navy Lt. Sherrin Whiteman, NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville logistics support officer, and the LSR team began coordinating with Dang and others in the Eisenhower supply department to prepare and fulfill the ship's LOGREQ.
"Because we communicate with the ship via email and telephone, communications were and always are our biggest challenge," said Whiteman. "Prior to the ship's arrival, we completed the costing and analysis, set up the contracts, and finally purchased every requirement for Eisenhower's LOGREQ."
The LOGREQ included port operations support, trash removal, rental of cranes, forklifts and cars, utility hookups, and food provisions.
Execution of the pier-side piece of the LOGREQ puzzle involved a definite strategy.
"We [LSRs] have a very specific idea of how we like to run things and [the ship's supply department] has a very specific idea of how things should be run. Once we agree on a concept of operations and understand each other's needs, then we put forward a program to get the work done," said Whiteman.
Once Eisenhower was moored at the pier, the food trucks that were lined on the pier before the ship was even in port began unloading their deliveries. Forklifts buzzed back and forth carrying 214 pallets of food to the riggers, who promptly readied each pallet for the cranes to lift onto the ship.
For NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville customer satisfaction was the goal in fulfilling Eisenhower's LOGREQ.
"We want to provide outstanding logistics support to every customer. We want them to leave here happy," said Whiteman.
"We are very a demanding customer," Dang said. "Flexibility is of tremendous importance to us; it is absolutely key. We need 24/7 support from the LSR team and we got that here. We wouldn't hesitate to come back to Mayport. The logistics support was awesome and it's nice to have a port visit somewhere other than home."
"I have an amazing team. They make this job incredibly easy," said Whiteman. "We are the only [team] that represents Capt. Saunders [NAVSUP FLC Jacksonville commanding officer] that has daily contact with ships. We are the face of [NAVSUP] FLC Jacksonville to the fleet; so it's important that we do everything we can to help the ships out."
"This really was an extraordinary opportunity for my Mayport LSR Team. I was very pleased when this LOGREQ was delivered into their capable hands. I knew the Eisenhower Supply department would be as impressed with their dedication to logistics and fleet support as I am," said Saunders.
