CORONADO, Calif. (NNS) -- NAVFAC Southwest, Fleet Readiness Center (FRC) Southwest, and Naval Base Coronado (NBC) celebrated the completion of a renovation project at Naval Base Coronado with a ribbon cutting ceremony July 22.

Members of the official ribbon cutting ceremony included FRC Southwest Commanding Officer Capt. Fred Melnick, NAVFAC Southeast Landscape Architect Designer Jose Aguila, and FRC Southwest's Daniel Conley and Matthew Schreck.

NAVFAC Southwest awarded a $95,717 contract to Hugo Alonso Inc. Sept. 12, 2010 to redesign the area surrounding FRC Southwest's building at NBC from a high-water-and high-maintenance area, to a low maintenance and low water usage multipurpose plaza.

Hugo Alonso Inc., removed previously existing features from the area and installed a central irrigation control system with radio remote capabilities. Design features included the construction of foundation for the supporting pole and seating circular bench with drainage system, a cobble border at the two islands, hardscape of stamped and scored colored concrete, handicap accessible ramps and curbs, and painting of existing steam pipes.

A 3/4-scale model of the Navy's first amphibious aircraft, A1 Triad, and a bench, were incorporated into the design by Jose Aguila. The model plane was built and installed by FRC personnel. FRC provided and installed two metal emblems also included in the design of the multipurpose plaza.

"NAVAFC Southwest FEAD (Facilities Engineering and Acquisition Division) and FRC Southwest's efforts highlighted FRC Southwest's base headquarters building and paid respect to the Navy's first amphibious plane," said Aguila. "This highly visible project was well received by the Fleet Readiness Center."

Leadership in energy efficient design features include low water use and a high efficiency irrigation system paired with drought tolerant plants and smart landscaping throughout the plaza. Efficiency and low impact to the environment reflect the Navy's and NAVFAC's commitment to providing highly sustainable design.

"I began this project as a PDC (professional development center) intern and helped with completion after graduating the PDC program," said Aguila. "I took the project from design to design development, to construction, and completed it with construction support to the FEAD. I thank the folks who worked directly on this project."
