NAVAL AIR STATION KINGSVILLE, Texas (NNS) -- Naval Air Station Kingsville has set modified Tropical Storm Condition Three July 28th in preparation for the arrival of Tropical Storm Don.
Modified Tropical Storm Condition Three is set when tropical storm-force winds and rain is expected for the local area within 48 hours. A modified condition simply means that not all the prescribed settings for a particular storm condition are required.
NAS Kingsville Executive Officer Cmdr. Scott Wilmot set the base in Condition Three (modified) after a regional weather brief from the National Weather Service. The forecast for Tropical Storm Don is for the storm to move on a north-north westerly track through the Gulf of Mexico over the next 24 hours, with a potential landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast by early evening July 29.
"As of right now, it looks like (the storm) will reach the South Texas coast (the evening of July 29th)," Wilmot said. "While the forecasts for the storm vary, we can expect strong winds and rainfall of 3-5 inches through midday July 30th. With that in mind, I'm directing the base to set a modified Condition Three to prepare the air station for the storm."
Training Air Wing Two is expecting a full schedule of flight training tomorrow, but if storm conditions warrant, the Wing will stop training and move the 58 T-45 Goshawk aircraft currently on board the base into hangars to protect them from the storm.
The NAS Kingsville Commissary, Navy Exchange and all MWR facilities will be open normal hours tomorrow, with plans for regular weekend hours for Saturday pending the track of the storm.
