EU Says Serbia-Kosovo Meeting Canceled

July 19, 2011

A meeting between Serbian and Kosovo negotiators scheduled for July 20 has been canceled, according to an RFE/RL correspondent in Brussels.

European Union mediator Robert Cooper said in Brussels that the talks were canceled because although the two sides are "very close to agreement on a number of items," it became clear that such an agreement was not going to happen at that scheduled round of discussions.

Cooper said the dialogue would be resumed in September.

The EU-brokered talks focus on outstanding issues related to Kosovo's 2008 unilateral declaration of independence, which Serbia does not recognize.

Kosovo's declaration of independence has so far been recognized by 72 countries, including the United States and all but five members of the European Union.
