German-Franco military brigade to send 500 troops to Afghanistan

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Jul 5, IRNA -- Some 500 soldiers of the German-Franco military brigade will be sent to Afgahnistan by the end of this month, said a spokeswoman of the brigade on Tuesday headquartered in the southwestern town of Donaueschingen.

The soldiers will be deployed in Afghanistan for a six-month mission as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Mazar-i-Sharif and Kunduz.

Founded in 1989, the German-Franco brigade is the only bi-national brigade in the world.

The brigade has taken part in foreign military operations since 1996.

It has also dispatched combat troops to Afghanistan on a regular basis over the past seven years.

There are around 6,000 French and German troops serving in the brigade, based in several southwest German towns.

The brigade is also part pf the Strasbourg-based Euro Corps which includes also soldiers from other European Union countries.

Britain, the US and France have maintained military bases in Germany since the end of World War II.
