Border guard killed in skirmish on Azerbaijan-Iran border
12:19 04/07/2011 BAKU, July 4 (RIA Novosti) - The commander of a border squad was killed in a shootout on the Azerbaijan-Iran border in the Yardimli region of Azerbaijan, a borders spokesman told RIA Novosti on Monday.
A group of armed individuals violated the border from the direction of the Islamic Republic of Iran on Sunday and opened fire.
"As a result (of the skirmish), the leader of a boarder squad, Lt. Rufat Guliyev, was severely wounded and died while being taken to the border post," the spokesman said.
Investigations are underway in connection with the incident.
