Violent clashes erupt in Cairo's Liberation Square

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, July 4, IRNA -- Cairo’s Liberation Square on Sunday evening was the scene of violent clashes between protesters and vendors who wanted to sell their goods in and around the square.

The protesters prevented vendors from entering the Egyptian capital's Liberation Square by stretching a rope around the square which resulted in scuffles between protesters and vendors and throwing stones by groups at each other.

More than 200 people were injured during clashes between protesters and vendors. Liberation square was closed due to the presence of security forces.

Windshields of passing by cars were shattered due to the intensity of the clashes and demonstrators torched the goods of vendors.

The demonstrators detained some of the vendors and tried to hand them over to police.

The protesters set up a mobile infirmary around Liberation Square because they were afraid that they could be arrested in case they went to hospitals.

Liberation Square has been the scene of protests by demonstrators demanding expediting the court proceedings of the ousted Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak and his ousted Interior Minister Habib al-Adeli.
