VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (NNS) -- On June 29, the ribbon was cut at Navy Exchange (NEX) Norfolk, Va., to mark the grand opening of its newly expanded Main Store.

With more than 180,000 square feet of retail space, it is now the largest NEX in the world.

"A military installation of this size deserves a world class Navy Exchange," said Rear Adm. (Sel) Glenn C. Robillard, Commander, Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM). "This is our flagship store. Our customers have waited patiently for these renovations to be finished and now they can shop in this beautiful new NEX."

The expanded NEX features a larger selection of toys, sporting goods, sunglasses/watch shop and food items as well as a state-of-the-art lawn and garden center. The NEX's second floor has an expanded uniform/tailor shop, a major appliance center, a large selection of mattresses and an enhanced special order center.

The original NEX has been fully renovated and features expanded fashion departments and upgrades such as improved cash registers. The NEX also offers upgraded optical dry cleaning shops and a renovated food court and barber/beauty shops with "spa" services. The $25 million project took three years to complete.

"It is a great day at Naval Station Norfolk," said Capt. Mary Jackson, Commanding Officer, Naval Station Norfolk. "Our mission is to support the fleet, fighter, and family and this expansion does just that. Providing state-of-the art, shopping facilities and expanded services for our Sailors and their families enhances their quality of life."

The grand opening festivities included visits from a couple of pro sports celebrities: Baltimore Ravens linebacker, Ray Lewis; Arizona Cardinals Offensive Tackle, Levi Brown; and Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter, Phil Davis. Lewis spent time visiting wounded warriors prior to signing autographs for NEX customers.
