Secretary-General welcomes Morocco's constitutional reform plan

22 June 2011 – Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today welcomed the constitutional reform proposals which the Moroccan Government will put to the country’s people at a referendum in July.

“The Secretary-General commends the people and the Government of Morocco for the peaceful manner in which they have been conducting the national process of political reforms,” said statement released by a spokesperson.

“In this regard, the Secretary-General welcomes the constitutional reforms announced by His Majesty King Mohammed VI on 17 June which will be submitted to a referendum on 1 July 2011,” it said.

“The constructive role of all national stakeholders, in particular the youth is important, as it is for them to continue to engage in the ongoing process through dialogue and without violence.

“The Secretary-General hopes the reform process will concretely respond to the legitimate aspirations of the people of Morocco.”

Morocco’s constitutional reform plan follows months of unrest in many countries across North Africa and the Middle East.
