JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) Jacksonville and Commander, Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) officially opened the new Aviation Fuels Facility at Naval Station (NS) Mayport, Fla., with a ribbon cutting, May 31.
It was a significant day for FISC Jacksonville, DLA Energy, and NS Mayport with the $3.4 million DLA Energy-funded facility finally opening its doors for business.
It took 13 months for FISC Jacksonville, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast, and NS Mayport personnel to construct the POL (petroleum, oil, and lubricants) facility, which spans more than 1,600 square feet.
During the ceremony, Commander, Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) Aviation Rear Adm. Vincent Griffith stressed the importance of the new facility. He said it will enhance customer support to the aviation war fighter, and it demonstrates the interoperability of Department of Defense components, specifically DLA and the Navy.
FISC Jacksonville Aviation Fuels Division Officer Lt. Mike Labbe also believes it will improve customer support.
"This new facility centralizes and consolidates all fuel functions into one location on the airfield giving direct support to FISC Jacksonville's aviation customers. It will improve our overall performance with the new aircraft direct refueling system replacing the use of refueling trucks," he said.
The FISC Jacksonville Detachment NS Mayport Aviation Fuels Division is comprised of military and civilian personnel that support four SH-60 LAMPS (Light Airborne Multipurpose System) Mark III/IV squadrons, aircraft from nuclear power aircraft carriers, guided missile cruisers, and guided missile destroyers supporting 2nd and 4th fleet operations, and transient aircraft from other government components.
In addition to the ribbon cutting, the festivities included tours of the new facility's administration spaces, fuel laboratory, and an overview of the new refilling system. Attendees were also treated to an awards ceremony and a barbecue hosted by fuels personnel.
"This team is already doing an incredible job of accomplishing the mission," said Fleet and Industrial Supply Center Jacksonville Commanding Officer, Capt. Joyce Saunders. "So, with this new state-of-the-art facility and technology at their disposal, the fuels team will make their operation even more efficient improving support to our customers."
