SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Southwest awarded a $155.87 million to build joint strike fighter (JSF) hangars aboard Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Yuma, Ariz., June 9.
These will be the first joint strike fighter hangars on the West Coast
"It is very rewarding to see years of planning and design work come to fruition with the award of these construction contracts," said Scott Knutson, NAVFAC Southwest JSF program manager. "This is just the beginning of the JSF program for NAVFAC. Since most, if not all, of the Department of the Navy's West Coast JSF program will be within the NAVFAC Southwest area of responsibility, I look forward to constructing JSF facilities for years to come."
Two companies will build two aircraft maintenance hangars and simulator facility and upgrade communications and utilities infrastructure for the Marine Corps F-35 joint strike fighter squadrons at the Yuma air station.
Dck/TtEC, LLC of Honolulu, Hawaii, was awarded $137.49 million to construct the aircraft maintenance hangars and upgrade the communications and utilities infrastructure. The proposed new hangar construction will include a new aircraft taxiway and parking apron and necessary components to the hangars to meet JSF program requirements.
The upgrades to the utilities infrastructure will construct two concrete potable water storage tanks, demolish and replace existing water distribution lines, and relocate and upgrade the existing sewer collection systems. The upgrade to the communication infrastructure will construct a new communication utility backbone.
Sundt Construction Inc. of Tempe, Ariz. was awarded $18.38 million to construct a simulator facility at MCAS Yuma. The simulator facility will include a classroom, mission planning and rehearsal room, conference room, simulator repair shop and spares, training devise database generation system, training system support center, flight equipment room, break room, and administrative, training support and security office, and other areas.
"The JSF program is a program of global significance," said Knutson. "The JSF program is the largest procurement program ever done by the Department of Defense. The F-35 fighter jets are the next generation of jets to take the international air defense stage. They will not only be utilized by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corp, but also abroad with many foreign partners."
The JSF construction project at MCAS Yuma is scheduled for completion by fall 2012.
