Baltic Operations 2011 Transitions to Tactical Phase

BALTIC SEA (NNS) -- After a series of training events, the ship and air asset of Baltic Operations (BALTOPS) 2011 are transitioning to the tactical phase of the exercise, June 11.
During the initial phase, elements in the multinational exercise practiced seamanship, gunnery, and communications, testing and improving their ability to work jointly.
"Multinational exercises allow us to leverage the strengths of all our partners," said Capt. Bob Cepek, chief of operations, Carrier Strike Group 8. "The initial phase helped us understand the different processes through which all our forces operate. Now it is time to put that knowledge and skill into practice."
The exercise currently continues with elements of a complex scenario involving sea control, humanitarian assistance, and coalition peacekeeping operations in the Baltic region.
"The scenario is robust and challenging," stated Capt. Cepek. "This exercise involves elements that will assist us in multi-national operations anywhere in the world."
BALTOPS 2011 maritime operations that will continue through June 17. Nations participating include Belgium, Denmark, France, Georgia, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Sweden, and the United States.
