NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic, relieved the executive officer of the Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) June 6.

Rear Adm. Ted Branch relieved Capt. Robert Gamberg of his duties following the completion of an investigation into allegations of an improper relationship.

During the admiral's mast, it was determined that Gamberg was in violation of Uniform Code of Military Justice articles 133 (conduct unbecoming an officer) and 92 (failure to obey order or regulation). Gamberg was awarded a punitive letter of reprimand.

Mast is an administrative proceeding where a senior officer in the chain of command can impose non-judicial punishment for disciplinary offenses that do not rise to the level of a courts-martial. It is referred to as captain's or admiral's mast depending upon the rank of the individual leading the proceeding.

Gamberg had been reassigned to the staff of Commander, Naval Air Force Atlantic while the investigation was being conducted. He will remain on staff during the ongoing administrative process.

Capt. Ted Williams has been named as interim executive officer of USS Dwight D. Eisenhower until a permanent relief can be assigned.
