Suicide attack thwarted in Kabul as NATO head visits

RIA Novosti

13:54 24/05/2011 KABUL, May 24 (RIA Novosti) - A suicide bomber attempted to assassinate Afghan's deputy head of national security in Kabul on Tuesday, the attack coinciding with an unannounced visit by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, regional media said.

The militant drove a car packed with explosives at Homeland Security Deputy Chief Ahmad Zia's motorcade, but security guards opened fire and prevented the attack. The would-be suicide bomber was wounded and hospitalized.

The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.

Rasmussen plans to meet Afghan President Hamid Karzai during his visit.
