ASAN, Guam (NNS) -- Naval Airborne Weapons Maintenance Unit (NAWMU) 1 held a change of command ceremony at Top o' the Mar in Asan, Guam April 28.
Cmdr. Dion J. Edon relieved Cdr. Heriberto Gonzalez as NAWMU 1's commanding officer.
The ceremony's guest speaker, Capt. Patrick M. Walsh, Commander Fleet Air Forward chief of staff, praised Gonzalez for his outstanding leadership at the helm of NAWMU 1.
"During your command tour you've certainly had your fair share of challenges but you've handled each one of them extremely well," he said. "Not only am I proud of you for that but NAWMU 1 is a better organization because of your leadership and your efforts."
Walsh went on to say that the Navy had definitely made the right choice when assigning Gonzales to command.
"Cmdr. Gonzalez, you have accomplished a great deal and your command has exceeded every expectation in every area," he said. "You did a tremendous job of taking care of your people, developing them as Sailors, and the Navy has had the right man at exactly the right time to take care of NAWMU 1."
Walsh then presented Gonzalez with the Meritorious Service Medal for his exceptional conduct in the performance of duties as commanding officer.
After receiving the medal, Gonzalez credited his award and the accomplishments of his command to the men and women of NAWMU 1.
"You guys have definitely met all challenges that have been given to you and have done exceptionally well," he said.
After the reading of official orders, Edon said that he was humbled by the opportunity and challenges ahead.
"It's my goal to leverage my almost 30 years of Navy service to continue to meet the mission of this unique command and to lead and support to the best of my abilities our most important and valuable asset...the professional Sailors and civilians attached to NAWMU 1," he said. "I look forward to serving as your commanding officer as we meet our mission and continue our partnership with our local community."
After the ceremony, members of the command presented Gonzalez with a shadow box and plaque to commemorate his retirement after more than 32 years of military service.
NAWMU 1 is a munitions maintenance activity and combat support unit manned and operated to conduct intermediate and selected depot level maintenance. The command tests and repairs air and select surface-launched missiles and guided weapons and components in support of the U.S. Navy worldwide.
