SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Commander, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 1 was relieved of command by Commander, Carrier Strike Group (CSG) 1, April 29.

Capt. Donald Hornbeck was relieved from his command by Rear Adm. Samuel Perez due to a loss of confidence in his ability to command. Capt. John Steinberger, deputy commander of DESRON 1 assumed command of the squadron currently underway in the Arabian Sea.

Rear Adm. Perez imposed non-judicial punishment on Capt. Hornbeck on April 29 following an investigation into allegations of inappropriate personal conduct. Non-judicial punishment is an internal administrative action used by commanders as means of maintaining good order and discipline both at sea and on shore.

Hornbeck has been assigned administrative duties at U.S. Third Fleet Headquarters.

CSG 1 and DESRON 1 are embarked on USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) conducting support for Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn, as well as maritime security operations in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility.
