NORFOLK, Va. (NNS) -- Fleet Weather Center's Combined Fleet Meteorological and Oceanographic (METOC) Watch Center was commissioned in Norfolk by the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command commander; the commanding officer, Fleet Weather Center, during a ribbon cutting ceremony April 20.
Rear Adm. Jonathan White, commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, and Capt. William H. Nisley II, commanding officer, Fleet Weather Center, presided over the ceremony officially opened the new watch floor.
The improved visual display capabilities and updated systems employed on the new watch floor improve synchronization of weather products to the fleet. The single all-inclusive watch center fosters improved collaboration, situational awareness, and cross training opportunities among watch standers yielding more agile and responsive support.
"What our team delivered today is a capability that allows us to provide comprehensive operational support to the fleet for years to come," said Nisley.
When Fleet Weather Center-Norfolk was established in October 2010, plans were developed to build a new watch center combining watch standers from the former Maritime and Aviation Forecast Centers as well as personnel from Fleet Weather Center's sea-going component, the Strike Group Oceanography Team.
"The fleet has confidence and trust in the weather products we provide every day," said White. "This is not because of the improved systems and information capabilities that the watch center offers, but because of the vigilance and skill of the Aerographer's Mates and METOC officers that make up our community."
Fleet Weather Center, Norfolk is responsible for maritime and aviation weather forecasting, resource protection, deploying Strike Group and Mobile Team Detachments in support of Navy and joint operations and training throughout the 2nd, 4th and 6th Fleet Areas of Responsibility to include weather warnings to activities located in Navy Regions Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, Europe, Southwest Asia and AFRICOM.
