UK soldier dies after being injured in Afghan blast

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, Apr 20, IRNA -- A UK soldier has died after being evacuated back to Britain for medical treatment for injuries sustained while clearing roadside bombs in Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced Wednesday.

The soldier, from 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, Royal Logistics Corps, was on an operation to clear improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in the Nahr-e Saraj district on Monday when one bomb detonated.

The MoD said that he was taken to Camp Bastion in Helmand before being evacuated to the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Birmingham, central England, where he died on Tuesday.

The latest death takes the total number of UK military personnel, who have died since the overthrow of the Taliban regime in 2001, to 364, including 17 so far this year.

A British commander warned on Tuesday that the Taliban were expected to change tactics during the summer fighting season to regain ground lost to coalition and Afghan forces over the past six months.

Major General John Lorimer told a briefing at the Foreign Office in London that insurgents were likely to use 'large-scale, spectacular attacks' to try to destabilise the transition process in Afghanistan.
