SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- Navy divers completed repairs to amphibious dock landing ship USS Tortuga (LSD 46), on March 11, four days earlier than scheduled, enabling the ship to deploy to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to Japan.

Divers from Naval Sea Systems Command and Ship Repair Facility, Sasebo, Japan, replaced propeller seals for each blade of the ship's port and starboard controllable pitch propeller hubs.

"Naval Sea Systems Command's Underwater Ship Husbandry team supports fleet divers conducting ship repairs worldwide. Ship repairs in Japan are recent examples of the team's ability to support Fleet readiness, anywhere our ships pull in and are in need of maintenance," said Bill Reid, Naval Sea Systems Command, underwater ship husbandry division director.

The repairs were conducted pierside, without the use of a drydock. Waterborne maintenance minimizes the need to use dry docks for repairs, extends the interval between dry-dockings and minimizes the amount of ship time spent in dry dock. In addition to the dollar cost saving, the repairs also increase the availability of naval ships for tasking.

In 2010, Naval Sea Systems Command's Underwater Ship Husbandry division saved the Navy more than $23 million, conducting waterborne maintenance and repairs on naval ships, eliminating or delaying the need for costly dry docking and returning ships to the Fleet sooner.
