IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, March 24, IRNA -- Pakistan Wednesday welcomed Afghan President Hamid Karzai's announcement of transfer of security responsibilities to own forces later this year.

The Afghan president on Tuesday announced that security responsibilities in six provinces will be transferred to the Afghan forces from the international forces in summer this year.

Karzai said initially security responsibility would be transferred to the Afghan forces in Kabul Province, except Sarobi District, Herat, Panjsher, Bamian, the capital of Laghman, Mehtarlam, and the capital of Helmand Province, Lashkargah.

“We felicitate President Karzai on the initiation of this process and wish him and the Afghan government every success,” the Pakistan Foreign Ministry said.

The Ministry’s spokesperson described as important President Karzai’s announcement on the transfer of security and development responsibilities from NATO/ISAF to the Afghan government.

“As a sincere well-wisher of the Afghan people, we are confident that the proud Afghan nation with great history and traditions is itself eminently qualified to forge a glorious future that accords with its national aspirations,” the statement said.

It said Pakistan deeply values its relations with Afghanistan and sincerely wishes stability, peace and prosperity for the brotherly people of Afghanistan.

The spokesperson said Pakistan will continue to stand by the Afghan nation, adding Pakistan will also continue to work closely with Afghanistan for realizing the immense potential of common and mutually beneficial development.
