Berlin allows US to use German bases for attacking Libya

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, March 20, IRNA -- Germany is indirectly supporting the western military action in Libya by allowing the US to use its German bases for such an assault, media reports said here on Sunday.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said while his country remained officially opposed to the western military campaign in the north African country, US troops could use their bases in Germany to implement the UN-mandated no-fly zone.

Berlin had adopted a similar stance during the 2003 Iraq war when it permitted Washington to use its bases in Germany to attack the forces of former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

There are currently 22 American military bases spread across Germany, hosting around 45,000 GIs.

Germany is a major logistics center for US military operations abroad and was the staging ground for American wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
