Yemeni Government Loyalists Attack Protesters in Sana'a

VOA News March 17, 2011

Yemeni government supporters have attacked opposition activists camping out in a square in the capital, Sana'a, wounding at least eight people.

Witnesses say the activists were attacked early Thursday by masked assailants they described as pro-government "thugs" firing live rounds and armed with daggers. Yemeni police also fired tear gas during the confrontation.

Thousands of Yemeni protesters have been camping in the Sana'a square for weeks to demand an immediate end to President Ali Abdullah Saleh's 32-year rule.

Protest-related violence in Sana'a and other parts of Yemen has killed at least 30 people since the anti-Saleh uprising began earlier this year.

Some information for this report was provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
