GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba (NNS) -- USS Gunston Hall (LSD 44) pulled into port at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to on load stores and equipment, and to perform an environmental wash-down, March 7-8.
Gunston Hall is visiting Guantanamo Bay before returning to the United States following a two-month deployment in support of Amphibious-Southern Partnership Station 2011.
Several Guantanamo personnel supported Gunston Hall's port visit, including Boatswain's Mate 1st Class Donovan Henderson, Port Operations department assistant leading petty officer; and Quartermaster 2nd Class Dennis Steel, an under-instruction dockmaster who arrived on base less than one month ago.
"I provided the logistical support by communicating the ship's needs to our supply and fuels departments," said Henderson. "By doing this, we [Naval Station] maintain a relationship with incoming U.S. and allied ships, and we ultimately support the mission of the base."
Steel shadowed Henderson during Gunston Hall's port visit, learning several important factors to being a GTMO dockmaster.
"It's really important that you provide timely assistance to the visiting ships," said Steel. "I learned how to talk with the pilot who guides the ship to the pier, through the radios."
Steel expects to be qualified as a dockmaster within the next two to three weeks.
